ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE FULL-TIME INSTRUCTOR

West Valley College is now accepting applications for a full-time tenure-track instructor to teach core and elective courses in the Administration of Justice Department. The core courses for the AJ major are: Introduction to the Administration of Justice, Criminal Investigation, Legal Aspects of Evidence, Community Relations, Principles and Procedures of Justice, Concepts of Criminal Law, and Police Report Writing. The department offers a number of electives needed to complete the major such as: Alcohol, Narcotics, and Drug Abuse, Motorcycle, Prison, and Street Gangs, Sexual Assault Investigation, Career Planning in Criminal Justice, Firearms Terminology and Safety, Juvenile Procedures. We are currently seeking applicants who have successful experience and a genuine interest in working with underrepresented groups.

ASSIGNMENT
This is a full-time 10-month tenure track position that begins in Fall 2011. The instructional assignment may include day and/or evening classes, Monday thru Saturday, and on-line courses as needed and which rotate among the department’s faculty. The assignment may also include serving as the department chair. Work location: West Valley College.

SALARY AND BENEFITS
  • Salary placement $48,891 (Step 1, Column A) to maximum earnable $111,085 (Step 36, Column F) annually, is based on academic achievement, teaching and related experience. Maximum entry: $76,087 (Step 9, Column F)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
    Any Bachelor's degree AND two years of experience OR Any Associate's degree AND six years of experience OR Possess a valid California community College Instructor’s credential in the discipline OR
  • The equivalent of the above. Degrees must be obtained from an accredited institution. Candidates with degrees not identical to the required state or local qualifications must apply for equivalency by completing the equivalency form which is part of the application package. This form must be completed for employment consideration.
  • Candidates with foreign degrees must provide official certification of equivalency to U.S. degrees, by a certified U.S. credential review service. Simple translation of the language on foreign diplomas, transcripts, coursework, or similar will NOT suffice, thus will cause the application packet to be judged as incomplete.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively teach, counsel or work with persons of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's Degree (or higher) in Administration of Justice, Corrections, or a closely-related area.
  • Hold or qualify for a basic or higher P.O.S.T (Peace Officers Standards in Training)
  • Certificate, from a certified Peace Officer’s Academy.
  • Teaching experience at the Community College level.
  • Knowledge of current issues in law enforcement and the criminal justice system.
  • Computer skills in basic word processing, spreadsheet and data management, as well as software related to online instruction.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach a student population having diverse skill and ability levels.
  • Ability to identify and evaluate the strengths and weakness of the department’s program and make recommendations for programmatic responses.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively advise and mentor students

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Instructional duties and assignments may consist of one or more of the following:
  • Provide instruction for assigned courses. This includes preparation for in-class or on-line/distance education activities, evaluation of students' work, consultation with students outside of class and/or on-line, maintenance of currency in the subjects taught.
  • Maintain accurate class and other records required by the college.
  • Submit, when due, attendance rosters and grade reports.
  • Follow course outlines as filed in the instruction offices.
  • Maintain office hours each week, at .5 hours per week per section.
  • Observe, support and enforce the regulations, policies and programs of the District and college.
  • Provide each student with a written course syllabus at the beginning of the course, as per instructions in the Faculty Handbook.
  • Refer students to appropriate college sources for information on counseling and other student services.
  • Assist students by providing advice on requirements for successful achievement in careers in administration of justice.
  • Work cooperatively within the college community.
  • Foster an environment that protects academic freedom within the college community.
  • Foster a positive working environment that is free from harassment, prejudice and/or bias.
  • Demonstrate a respect for the dignity of each individual.
